PHNOM PENH, June 5, 2024 – With Cambodia set to serve as the ASEAN-US Dialogue Coordinator Nation this year, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed his eagerness to deepen collaboration with the country during his visit.

Secretary Austin shared these remarks while meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace earlier today.

This visit marks Secretary Austin's second trip to Cambodia, his first being in 2022 for the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus in Siem Reap province. He noted that his return aims to bolster and broaden the scope of U.S.-Cambodian relations, particularly in defense and other mutual areas of interest.

The U.S. Defense Secretary commended the Cambodian Army's expertise in demining and expressed hopes for continued cooperation in this vital area.

Prime Minister Hun Manet extended a warm welcome to Secretary Austin and his delegation, acknowledging the strong and productive relationship between the two nations. He anticipates further enhancements in defense collaborations, which could include joint efforts in combating terrorism, human trafficking, and drug trafficking.

The discussions also covered a range of regional and international topics, focusing on promoting security, stability, peace, unity, and prosperity both regionally and globally, while aiming to achieve mutual benefits for both countries.
